Spa Care Maintenance and Water Purification
Routine care and maintenance of your spa ensures a healthy and enjoyable experience for your family and friends. You are about to learn the key factors that affect water quality, sanitiser effectiveness and other essential facts about proper spa maintenance.
The pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness levels of spa water contribute to total water balance. They interact to stabilise water quality, protecting spa equipment and sanitiser balance. The levels should be checked weekly and maintained in accordance with spa manufacturer instructions.
Ideally, maintained levels as follows:
Total Alkalinity 80-140 ppm
pH Level 7.2 - 7.6
Calcium Hardness 80-120 ppm
Chlorine 1.00 - 2.00 ppm
When the correct levels of total alkalinity, pH and calcium hardness are achieved, the water is considered to be balanced.
Acidic water caused by a low pH level is corrosive. Prolonged water acidity significantly reduces the lifespan of spa equipment. Corrosive water may cause unpleasant odours and skin irritation.
High pH levels cause scaling water that appears to be cloudy. A sustained scaling water condition causes damaging calcium deposits to form in circulation pipes and spa equipment.
The ability to neutralize or buffer acids in water is referred to as total alkalinity. It should be maintained between 80 – 140 ppm. It directly affects the adjustment and optimal pH level of the water.
For example, if total alkalinity is high, it is difficult to adjust the pH level. When total alkalinity is low, changes in pH levels are rapid and difficult to control.
To raise total alkalinity, add sodium bicarbonate in small quantities. To lower the total alkalinity, add hydrochloric acid in small quantities. Wait 1 hour and retest the water total alkalinity level.
The acid or alkaline level of spa water is measured as pH and affects the action of other chemicals. It is measured on a scale of 1 to 14. A reading of 7 is neutral, less than 7 is acidic and greater is alkaline.
An incorrect pH level…
- Inhibits chlorine and bromine efficiency
- Causes eye and skin irritations
- Corrodes metal fittings
- Promotes cloudy water
- Forms scale on spa walls and fittings
Measured at room temperature, pH measurement levels should average 7.2 – 7.8 to avoid equipment corrosion and reduction of sanitiser efficiency. To increase the pH level, add soda ash. Add acid to reduce the level. Wait 1 hour and retest the water pH level.
This condition refers to the level of minerals dissolved in water. High calcium hardness leads to minerals being extracted from the water causing scaling. Low calcium hardness leads to minerals being extracted from surrounding materials, decreasing the life span of your spa equipment.
The primary purpose of a sanitiser is to effectively eliminate potentially harmful bacteria in water. When water is heated, it creates a fertile environment for bacteria growth. A chemical sanitiser is your best defence against infections caused by bacteria.
Always add the recommended sanitiser dosage before entering a spa. Maintain the sanitiser level at 1.00 to 2.00 ppm. If the water is very hot, sanitiser is quickly consumed and should be checked regularly during spa use. After heavy usage, the water should be ‘shock’ dosed with chlorine and / or a non-chlorine oxidizer. Wait 1 hour and retest the water.
For general hygiene maintenance, keep the filter and water pumps clean. Check the filter regularly and remove hair, lint and other debris from the collection basket.
Filter cartridges remove oxidised, organic debris and suspended matter from the water. Sanitiser chemicals must be used together with a filtration system for clear, healthy spa water. It is crucial to operate a filtration system in accordance with manufacturer recommendations to ensure optimum clarity. If spa usage is higher than normal, a more rigorous filtration schedule is recommended.
Filter cartridges are designed to collect a specific amount of debris. Once saturated, water flow rate and filter effectiveness are diminished. Filter cartridges must be cleaned regularly and replaced after 9,000 hours depending on usage conditions.
Changing the Water
Spa water should be changed every 4 to 6 months. Alternatively, remove and replace 20% or 1/3 of the water volume every 3 to 4 weeks.
There are important health and safety requirements to enjoy your spa responsibly.
§ Children must be supervised at all times when in or near a spa.
§ Alcohol should not be consumed before and during the use of a spa.
§ The water temperature must never exceed 40C - Recommended range: 35 to 38C.
§ To avoid body stress, spa use should be restricted to about 20 minutes.
§ Do not submerge your head in the water.
§ Consult your doctor before spa use if you have a physical condition.
§ Seek medical advice if you have a heart condition, blood pressure issues or if pregnant.
§ Store chemicals in a cool, dry location and away from the reach of children.
